Chirp – programming a HAM radio with ease and convenience

This guide walks you through setting up and using CHIRP for common prep tasks like saving your personal contacts and importing local repeater, weather, and first responder stations. We use common BaoFeng radios, but the steps are basically the same for any model and across computer operating systems.

Chirp – programming a HAM radio

The cable talks with the radio through audio tones. So whenever doing this work, make sure your radio is tuned to a quiet frequency with no noise coming through (even with the volume at max). We suggest removing the antenna from the radio before connecting it to your computer.

A dialog box will appear prompting you to choose your port, radio vendor, and model. The vendor and model are relatively straightforward; for a BaoFeng UV5RV2+, choose BaoFeng for the vendor and UV-5R for the model. The port, however, is a bit trickier.

The next-generation version of CHIRP is now available for general use! This has the latest and greatest set of features and fixes, but not all radio drivers have been converted yet. Please see ChirpNextBuild for an overview of what CHIRP-next is, and ChirpNextBuildChanges for an overview of some of the larger changes to the UI. Drivers that have not been validated with CHIRP-next are denoted by an asterisk (*) symbol on the supported model list on the Home page.

The current "daily" builds of CHIRP are the most stable and have the widest driver support. However, this older version is no longer being developed and does not work well on modern macOS and Linux operating systems. You should only use these legacy builds if your radio is not supported by CHIRP-next.

CHIRP is a free, open-source tool for programming your amateur radio. It supports a large number of manufacturers and models, as well as provides a way to interface with multiple data sources and formats.

  • If you are a vendor and want to have your radio supported by CHIRP, please see InformationForVendorsSupported Radio ModelsAbbreeAR-518
